From Image to Sound – A Musical Journey with Mussorgsky

Modest Mussorgsky’s famous piano cycle ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ was inspired by an exhibition by the painter Viktor Hartmann. In Joachim Linckelmann’s arrangement for woodwind quintet, the individual musical pictures become a colourful journey through an imaginary exhibition.

Distinctive melodies, varied timbres and surprising musical scenes bring to life impressive, imaginative and, at times, whimsical images. The result is a musical exhibition in which each piece tells its own story and the boundaries between image and sound become blurred.

As part of the special exhibition ‘A Journey from Dream to Reality’, created in collaboration with Terre des Hommes, we are delighted to welcome the woodwind quintet ‘Cantus Ventorum’.

Cantus Ventorum was formed in 2024 out of a shared passion for chamber music. The five musicians met whilst studying at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). What began as a shared course of study developed into a musical collaboration underpinned by friendship, mutual trust and, above all, the joy of making music together.

In Latin, ‘Cantus Ventorum’ means ‘the song of the winds’. Each of the five instruments – flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon – brings its own timbre and character to the ensemble. Thus, five individual voices come together to create a multifaceted overall sound that unites the diversity of our instruments.
